DAY TWENTY-FOUR - The Final Girls (horror movie challenge - 31 days of horror)

DAY TWENTY-FOUR - THE FINAL GIRLS (2015)

I heard about this movie awhile back and I've been super excited for it! Luckily it was totally worth the wait and was super fun to watch. The Final Girls is a horror comedy directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and stars Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), Adam DeVine (Workaholics), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries), and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development).

Max's mother is known for starring in Camp Bloodbath when she was younger and when she passes away, Max is invited to an anniversary screening of the movie. During the film a fire breaks out and while trying to escape through the exit behind the screen, Max and her friends are instead transported into the film itself. They quickly realize in order to make it out alive they have to survive Camp Bloodbath and kill its famous slasher - Billy.

Billy is a machete wielding, mask wearing slasher and plays homage to Friday the 13th. The film is filled with nods to the slasher genre, including all the stereotypes like the music and people dying as soon as they have sex. The film does a great job of poking fun at the genre without going overboard. It's like a good healthy mix of Scream and Cabin in the Woods.

Malin Akerman is absolutely a joy to watch and really stole all the scenes. Alia Shawkat and Adam DeVine showed off their comedy strengths keeping me laughing the whole way through. Of course, despite the comedy it's also a story of loss. Max struggles to let go of her mother and when confronted with her in this movie reality she tries extra hard to save her. But she learns that the hardest thing isn't saving her mother, it's letting her go.

The horror side of things - pretty disappointing. There could've been a lot more gore and blood, but it was very lacking on that side of things.

But it was super fun to watch and any horror fan will be able to laugh at themselves and enjoy the ride. 8/10.

Alright, I'm going to get back to carving pumpkins - I've got one left. And it's time to watch Insidious 3!

Stay Spooky!
